Top Horror Movies from Asia
Top Horror Movies from Asia have brought some great and original ideas to the world. Many Asian horror films that are popular have been remade by American studios. Here is a list of some of the best Asian horror movies.
First on the top horror movies from Asia and one of the more recent ones to come from Korea is The Host. This movie has been compared to Steven Spielberg’s Jaws in many ways. It is about a monster that terrorizes humans on Seoul’s Han River. A young girl is taken hostage by the creature. Her family must stand up and take action into their own hands to seek out the girl. The Host provides some very intense scenes and some good laughs.
Another good horror movie from China is The Eye. This movie is about a young woman that gets an eye transplant after being blind. All is good until she starts to see ghosts. She then sets out to find where the eyes came from and the origins of the donor. There are a few scenes in this movie that provide good scares particularly one in an elevator. There is a remake of this movie coming out in 2008 starring Jessica Alba. It is definitely one of the top horror movies from overseas.
Next is one of the top horror movies in Japan and is the highest grossing horror film in Japan called Ringu (The Ring). It is about a video tape that when people watch it they have a week to live. This is a film that has good characters and deserves a look at. There was already a remake of this film starring Naomi Watts. Though the American version is an OK film, the original still stands above it and is one of the top horror movies from Japan.
The last one on the list of top horror movies from Asia is The Audition. A man is looking for a new wife and decides to take auditions to see if he can find one. A woman catches his attention and from there he decides to move along with his plan. She is not what she appears. Soon he finds himself in a nightmare. This graphic movie can be hard to watch even for those that enjoy violence. Consider yourself warned.
There are many titles coming out of China, Japan, Korea, and so on that have been remade. It seems that Hollywood has taken a liking to bringing the stories from overseas and trying to recreate these top horror movies. In my opinion most the time the originals are better.

While this is a decent list, you’re forgetting some of the best Asian horror films out there. First is “A Tale of Two Sisters,” a South Korean horror film that will blow your mind. From the beginning, its a roller coaster ride and the ending will leave you wondering how you arrived at that point. A completely breath-taking film, from the amazing mood lighting to the stunning storyline, its not one to be missed.
Another great Asian classic is “Dark Water,” a J-Horror film by none other than Hideo Nakata, the director who brought us “Ringu.” Though the storyline (now) seems a bit cliche, it doesn’t lack the -really- good scare. A woman moves into an apartment with her daughter and notices that a water stain in her ceiling has some supernatural qualities. And that’s not even getting into the little red bag that just won’t go away. Nakata’s use of color and sound (the ceaseless sound of rain will chill you) also help to make this an instant classic.
Another couple of great horror films are both of the 3…Extremes films, featuring segments from Kim Ji-woon (Memories), Nonzee Nimibutr (The Wheel), and Peter Chan (Going Home) in the first movie, and Takashi Miike (Box), Fruit Chan (Dumplings), Park Chan-wook (Cut) in the second movie. The segments that stand out above the rest are Memories, Going Home, Cut, and Box. Though both films are a great overview of the Asian horror film industry.
